A new Technical Area 2, Plan Gaming and Outcome Analysis contract was awarded as part of AFRL’s Fight Tonight program.
Helping Create The Civil Service Of The Future
This work, worth an estimated $17m, aims to enhance the air operations planning process, particularly in competitive environments, to support mission planners.
Work under this contract will see BAE Systems introduce AI-based technology into interactive game environments and provide US Air Force mission planners with new tools to expedite the planning process for complex air combat operations.
This related work will be performed by BAE Systems’ research and development organization Fast Labs in collaboration with other sub-contractors including Uncharted Software and the Kestrel Institute.
According to the company, the new solution solves the problem of long manual planning cycles by providing a new interactive user interface.

This allows planners to quickly explore/review and access all relevant plans to finalize the most appropriate plan for a particular mission.
The entire process will be further improved by several new tools, allowing planners to access more projects than currently possible.
Cloud Enablement: Setting Ourselves And Our Customers Up For Success
BAE Systems Fast Labs technical director Mike Miller said: “This technology is about using AI to provide commanders with more options, faster and with more detail.
“Drag-and-drop video game-like interactions reduce the time it takes to make a series of incremental adjustments to a project from hours to minutes.”
In 2018, BAE Systems was selected by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to build autonomy modeling software for military planners.

Bae Wins £7.4m Archerfish Contract For South Korean Navy
BAE Systems has bought the aerospace division of Ball Corporation for $5.6bn, so that it can corner the company’s pioneering space infrastructure solutions across defense from global competition.
Europe’s largest defense contractor has agreed to buy a Colorado-based company that builds components that provide aerospace technologies and data exploitation solutions, from sensors to communications.
BAE Systems is committed to multi-domain integration because “decisions involving many variables need to be made in milliseconds.” Announced on August 17, the deal will help BAE build its portfolio of new products in space, a force-multiplier that enhances military operations in all domains.
Ball Aerospace provides core capabilities in pointing, acquisition, tracking and real-time processing that are able to meet the needs of the laser application market.
Bae Systems To Launch First Leo Multi Sensor Satellite Cluster In 2024
So far, however, BAE’s space-based assets extend to its latest ‘Azalea’ cluster, a cluster of four multi-sensor satellites that collects optical, radar and radio frequency data, which was originally planned to launch next year but not until 2025. The number of launches is increasing.
Until now, the British defense supplier has focused on its offerings as part of the Team Tempest consortium working on the UK’s Future Combat Air System, as well as the development of the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers.

BAE’s CEO Charles Woodburn said, “The strategic and economic rationale is strong as we continue to focus on high-priority defense and intelligence spending areas, strengthening our world-class multi-domain portfolio.”
GlobalData Intelligence tells us that Ball Corporation posted revenue of $3.56bn in the second quarter ended June 2023, up 2.2% from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, BAE forecasts a compound annual growth rate of 10% over the next five years, expecting new space innovators to raise at least $2bn a year over the forecast period.
This has been a significant driver of acquisitions, as space agencies in the UK and Europe have relied on spaceflight infrastructure in the US since their recent inception and on innovation from their tech startups across its defense industrial base.
Ball has trusted client relationships among the intelligence community, including the US Department of Defense and civil space agencies.
How Space Comm Expo Set The Stage For The New Space Concept From Bae Systems Digital Intelligence
In a GlobalData analyst briefing on the future militarization of space (August 2023), aerospace and defense analyst James Marques notes the value of space-based weapons systems.
“With tensions rising in orbit in recent years, it won’t be long before weapons turn on each other in space itself.
“Nevertheless, a growing military presence in space and private sector innovation in industry are introducing new possibilities that states like the US are unlikely to pass up.”
As BAE Systems looks to secure its weapons systems production at a time of geopolitical tension, Ball’s expertise in spacecraft, mission payloads, optical systems, sensors, scientific and tactical systems, analytical instruments and antenna systems supports a wide range of products and services for the C4ISR, missile and munitions markets, both land-bound and Two use technologies to address across aerospace domains.
